Saint Michael's College
Student Investment Fund
Real capital. Real research. Real-world experience.
Mission
A Wealth of Learning
We give students the ability to cultivate a deep understanding of financial markets — with hands-on experience in portfolio management, equity research, and insight into careers across the financial sector.
Sustained Growth
The Fund drives sustained growth of the school's financial assets, benefiting generations of students to come — and encourages alumni giving that expands both the endowment and every student's opportunity to learn.
Investment Philosophy
- Will be investing in similar themes as the endowment, but for the sake of learning opportunity, the portfolio will include individual equities.
- Long-only value-based bottom-up investment strategy.
- "It's far better to buy a wonderful company at a fair price than a fair company at a wonderful price." — Warren Buffett.
Investment Objectives
- To increase asset value, adjusted for inflation and costs, over a market cycle (typically 3-5 years) with controlled risk. Targeting an annual return of 4% above inflation (CPI).
- Long-term growth and capital preservation.
- Manageable risk profile.
- Bi-annually rebalancing of portfolio based on sector allocation.
- Allocate investments across various sectors to mitigate the risk of one asset class adversely impacting the overall portfolio.
